Santiago de Compostella

762 titles, 972 volumes
Printed books and periodicals, 20th-21st century

Since 2002, the Centre d'études, de recherche et d'histoire compostellanes has regularly deposited part of its library in the premises of the Mazarine library. The works concerned are described in the Mazarine catalogue and SUDOC. They can be consulted in the reading room in the same way as the library's collections.

Founded in 1987 by René de la Coste-Messelière, closely linked to the Société française des amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle whose scientific and cultural objectives it pursues, the Centre d'études, de recherche et d'histoire compostellanes is devoted to the study and promotion of pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela and the historical, artistic, literary and cultural movements it has given rise to over the centuries.
The subjects covered by the library correspond to the centre's missions:

  • The road to Santiago de Compostela today: travel guides, pilgrims' testimonies, the sanctuary of Santiago de Compostela (publications by Xunta de Galicia);
  • The history of the pilgrimage and the sanctuary of Santiago de Compostela;
  • The history of pilgrimages in the Middle Ages, confraternities and hospitals, worship and devotional practices surrounding James Major.

The collection includes some works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a majority of titles published in the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st-century.

Half the titles are in French. The rest is mainly in Spanish but also in Galician and Italian, and includes works seldom found in French libraries. A few magazines complete the collection, including Compostelle, the review published by the Société des Amis de Saint Jacques, and special issues of journals of learned societies on the topics covered by the Centre.

N.B.: René de la Coste-Messelière's photographs and working papers are not part of the collection deposited with the Mazarine library.
